“I spent my life folded between the pages of books. In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”

Born at Midnight by C. C. Hunter

Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls, #1)Born at Midnight by C. C. Hunter
Summary from: goodreads.com

Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams, Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen…

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.

Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.

Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

I loved this book. I truly did. Just as quickly as I started it became my new addiction, I felt like I was Kylie and that I was living in this paranormal world and it was miserable and magical all at the same.

I rated it:

FOUR STARS! Only because this was not m favorite book in the series. When I re-read it and I catch all the little jokes that you wouldn't understand having not read the other books, I realize how the book really deserves a five....but for a first time my first impression was a four. a very HIGH four.

The first chapter for me started out like a bad contemporary novel. It tried to "fit in" using teenage slang. It was all drama, first scene: parents are fighting. It was very cliche.

But that was  only the first one (maybe two) chapters, because Kylie had to have a somewhat normal life before right? Something to compare the camp to.

Lets get down to this:

Things I didn't like: the attempt at the text language that Kylie used was slightly annoying and made me cringe internally. * see "Things I liked"

I didn't like how Kylie was constantly in denial about her being a paranormal, I mean it took her too long to come around and face the facts. But I suppose if I were in her place I would have steadily declined all that crazy evidence myself.

Miss Hunter did not capitalize the "w" in Were. (short for "Werewolf") so every time I read the book I was confusing "Were" for "were" and I couldn't tell which was which, and that sometimes made for awkward scenarios and sentences. (that's just a small pet peeve I had that I really needed to get out there.)

Things I liked:

I loved the characters! Oh my goodness! This is honestly one of the first books I've read where I didn't automatically have a team. I am just as evenly torn on whether I'm Team Derek or Team Lucas as I was when I started this book (and I've read  all of them...except the last one which is not in stores yet)

I loved the feel of the book, the way it was built, the customs of a paranormal camp and it felt very real, like if I were to go to a paranormal camp sometime in the near future I would certainly be able to compose myself and hold my own.

And most of all (at times this was strenuous on my poor fangirl heart though) I loved how Kylie was different even in a camp of people who were different. She never fit in anywhere, and she really played that role well.

*but as the book/series went on it became a part of her character and it really made the book what it was, I honestly don't know how you can have that book without it!

Overall I am intensely in love with this book and I recommend it to any paranormal lovers. All your creatures are here. From Fae to werewolf, to vampire to witch, and all the way back to shapeshifter.

This is a HUGE victory for C. C. Hunter. I am in love with her work.

**NOTE: I would rate this book PG-13 for content**

Shadow Falls: The Beginning

The Shadow Falls Series Vol.1: Born at Midnight and Awake at Dawn I LOVE the cover for this vol. And the title! the whole "The Beginning" thing is just SO AMAZING! What do you guys think about this?

Booking Through Thursday: Winter Reading

It’s the depth of winter here where I live right now … what books do you like to read when it’s snowy and white? What books do you read to evoke a real feeling of winter (good or bad)?

It is very snowy where Mari and I are as well! I personally love to snuggle up with a gripping book and read the hours away. But I do not have a specific preference to season, I read the next book on my list or the book that I keep seeing and just CANNOT wait to get my hands on.

Have a great Thursday!

Booking Through Thursday: 2013 New Year's Reading Resolutions

Booking Through Thursday! (and I almost wrote Tidbit Thursday ^.^)

Any reading resolutions for the new year? Reading more? (Reading less?) Reading better books? Bigger books? More series? More relaxing books?
And hey, feel free to talk about any other resolutions you might have, too … or why you choose NOT to have any.
Well I do not have a goal. Because last time I set a goal I JUST missed it! JUST missed it! Ugh! So close! So I prefer to just read. And let it take me wherever it does. Because reading is happiness. And reading is what I do. I don't need a goal on it. Though if I were to set any goals, it would be on my writing. But that's a completely different story.

What is everyones goals?
